Metal Part Inspection Using Smart Camera Automation
Metal part inspection is one of HNJ’s core competencies. One example of a metal part inspection application was to inspect a deep-drawn metal part. The part was made with a progressive die stamping process.
Insertion of the sleeve needed in-line quality control to ensure acceptable sleeve length. Before implementing our solution, it was clear that batch testing wasn’t good enough. Batch testing only looked at a few samples at a time, which was just not sufficient to check for errors across throughout the production line. That resulted in excessive defects that needed to be addressed.
To maximize quality control, HNJ Solutions, Inc. designed a system to check sleeves. The sleeve insertion measurements were inspected using our automated smart camera inspection system. This inspection was used to check for defects on every unit being produced.

A series of units in a tray can be inspected. This can be done for several units in a single batch.
Above is an example of a table-top solution developed by HNJ for tray-based inspections. This smart camera system inspects a series of metal parts sitting in the tray, moving to each part and checking each for defects, one at a time. If one or more are found defective, they are noted as “NG” or not good and the image shows exactly which part was defective. The image captured by the HNJ Solution also shows where the defect was found and highlights the failed part.
